Klare Luft und blauer Himmel sorgen gerade im tristen Winter für besonders gute Laune – und genau davon erleben wir fünf Tage am zweiten Advent 2019 im Fürstentum Monaco.
Wir reisen erst mit dem Flugzeug von Düsseldorf nach Nizza. Sobald wir durch die Wolkendecke stoßen, fliegen wir durch blauen Himmel, über die Alpen zur Cote Azur! Von dort geht es mit dem Taxi weiter nach Monaco.
Ziel ist das Fairmont Hotel, das direkt an der Haarnadelkurve und über der Formel 1 Rennstrecke liegt. Unser Zimmer ist noch nicht bereits für den Einzug, daher besuchen wir erst die Eurogin Konferenz im Grimaldi Forum – nur ein kurzer Spaziergang vom Hotel entfernt. Auf dem Weg dorthin kommen wir zum ersten Mal an der Großbaustelle vorbei, die das Projekt des neuen Hotelprojekts des Fairmont Hotel kennzeichnet. Rund 60 Hektar für neue Hotels und Feriendomizile. Später in unserem Zimmer haben wir einen Blick von oben und sind schwer beeindruckt von der Größe der Baustelle, auf der Tag und Nacht gearbeitet wird – lediglich sonntags werden die Arbeiten reduziert, dann werden nur Steine zur Befestigung in unter dem Wasserspiegel befindliche Quadrate verfüllt.
Natürlich liegt Monaco im Süden Europas – und doch sind wir gespannt auf das Wetter. Im Dezember finden wir das Fürstentum tagsüber bei ca. 8-16 Grad an, Sonnenaufgang ist gegen acht Uhr, Sonnenuntergang gegen 17 Uhr. Ich habe bei unseren Streifzügen durch die Stadt permanent den Eindruck, dass ich die falsche Kleidung anhabe – im Sonnenlicht komme ich mir in den dunklen Farben des Winters manchmal merkwürdig deplatziert vor.
Ein Highlight von Monaco sind natürlich die Boote in den Häfen. Wir erleben an den ersten Tagen ein unglaublich aufgewühltes Mittelmeer mit extrem hoher Dünung, die Tage danach liegt die See ruhig. Immer bewundern wir die Segelboote in den Regatten. Spektakulär – mal von den Schleppern ins Meer gezogen, mal mit Spinnaker im Wind und mal lässige Segler die steil über der Bordwand stehen.
Am Abend kommen wir an einer gemütlichen Markthalle vorbei, in der wir einen ersten Ricard nehmen und unseren Appetit anregen. Die Stadt ist wunderbar geschmückt und die Adventbeleuchtung begeistert die vielen Besucher. Das Casino, das Café de Paris und das Hotel de Paris sind Anziehungsmagnete für die schönen und schnellen Autos und die luxuriösen Pelzträgerinnen und ihre Begleiter.
Im Hafen besuchen wir den Weihnachtsmarkt. Hier werden Glühwein und Panini ebenso angeboten wie Austern und Champagner. Über allem thront das Riesenrad und alles ist herrlich bunt und schillernd beleuchtet. Im Hintergrund die Luxusjachten.
Am Freitag morgens ganz früh bekommen wir Tagesgäste – die Viking Sky fährt rückwärts im Dunkeln in den Hafen ein. Ihre Gäste erkunden die Stadt und wir wiederum erkunden die Viking Sky. Bei der ersten Dämmerung sticht das gigantische Kreuzfahrtschiff auch schon wieder in See – auf zur nächsten Station.
In Monte Carlo sehen wir uns natürlich auch die Altstadt mit Sitz der Grimaldis und der Verwaltung an. „Hotel de Ville“ (deutsch: Rathaus) heißt hier „Hotel de Goverment“ also Regierungssitz 🙂
Ein wunderbares schönes alternatives zweites Adventswochenende.
Mein Tipp: Auch im luxuriösen Monaco gibt es Supermärkte, in denen man sich mit günstigen Lebensmitteln versorgen kann. (Carrefour City, U-Market, Supermarche). Zudem arbeiten in den Büros, den Banken, den Versicherungen und Maklerbüros jede Menge Menschen, die mittags zum Essen gehen. Diese Orte sind günstig, allerdings mittags auch gut gefüllt, zudem haben einige wirklich nur mittags geöffnet. Beobachtet die Leute – sie zeigen Euch den Weg 🙂
Mein Tipp Nummer zwei: Bestellt Euch auf dem „Marche de Noel“ unbedingt einen kleinen Glühwein – ein normaler Glühwein hat 0,4 l – das ist eindeutig zu viel.

Happiness: Advent in Monte Carlo!
Clear air and a blue sky make for a particularly good mood especially in the dreary winter – and this is exactly what we experience five days on the second Advent 2019 in the Principality of Monaco.
Firstly we travel by plane from Düsseldorf to Nice. As soon as we pass through the cloud cover, we fly through the blue sky, over the Alps to the Cote Azur! From there we take a taxi to Monaco.
Our destination is the Fairmont Hotel, which is located directly at the hairpin bend and above the Formula 1 racetrack. Our room is not yet ready to move in, so we firstly visit the Eurogin Conference at the Grimaldi Forum – just a short walk from the hotel. On our way we pass for the first time the large construction site that characterizes the project of the new hotel project of the Fairmont Hotel. Around 60 hectares for new hotels and holiday homes. Later in our room, we have a view from above and are very impressed by the size of the construction site, where they work day and night – only on Sundays the work is reduced, then only stones are filled into squares below the water level.
Of course Monaco is in the south of Europe – and yet we are curious about the weather. In December we find the principality during the day at about 8-16 degrees, sunrise is about eight o’clock, sunset about 17 o’clock. During our wanderings through the city I permanently have the impression that I am wearing the wrong clothes – in the sunlight I sometimes feel strangely out of place in the dark colours of winter.
A highlight of Monaco definitely are the boats in the harbours. During the first days we experience an incredibly agitated Mediterranean Sea with extremely high swells, the days afterwards the sea is calm. We always admire the sailing boats in the regattas. Spectacular – sometimes pulled into the sea by the tugs, sometimes with a spinnaker in the wind and sometimes casual sailors standing steeply above the ship’s side.
In the evening we pass a cosy market hall, where we take a first Ricard and stimulate our appetite. The city is beautifully decorated and the Advent lighting inspires the many visitors. The Casino, the Café de Paris and the Hotel de Paris are magnets for the beautiful and fast cars and the luxurious furriers and their companions.
In the harbour we visit the Christmas market. Here you will find mulled wine and panini as well as oysters and champagne. Above all the big wheel is enthroned and everything is wonderfully colourful and illuminated. In the background the luxury yachts.
On Friday morning very early we get day guests – the Viking Star enters the harbour backwards in the dark. Your guests explore the city and we again explore the Viking Sky. At the first dusk the gigantic cruise ship sets sail again – on to the next station.
In Monte Carlo we also visit the old town with the Grimaldis and the administration. „Hotel de Ville“ (German: Rathaus) means „Hotel de Goverment“ so seat of government 🙂
But the most beautiful thing about our trip to the principality is the weather. This is the way to live, with clear air, with blue sky, with regattas we can watch, with cool and hot drinks, with breads and eclairs. Refuel, care for your skin, it’s wonderful.

My tip: Also in the luxurious Monaco there are supermarkets in which one can supply oneself with cheap food. (Carrefour City, U-Market, Supermarche). Spectaculaire – tantôt tiré à la mer par les remorqueurs, tantôt avec un spinnaker dans le vent et tantôt avec des marins occasionnels qui se tiennent abruptement au-dessus du flanc du navire.
Le soir, nous passons devant une halle accueillante, où nous prenons un premier Ricard et stimulons notre appétit. La ville est magnifiquement décorée et les lumières de l’Avent inspirent les nombreux visiteurs. Le Casino, le Café de Paris et l’Hôtel de Paris sont des aimants pour les belles et rapides voitures et les luxueux fourreurs et leurs compagnons.
Dans le port, nous visitons le marché de Noël. Vous y trouverez du vin chaud et des paninis ainsi que des huîtres et du champagne. Surtout la grande roue trône et tout est merveilleusement coloré et illuminé. En arrière-plan, les yachts de luxe.
Le vendredi matin, très tôt le matin, nous recevons des invités de jour – l’étoile Viking entre dans le port à reculons dans l’obscurité.
